Touch Focus Without Continuous Autofocus Gh5
GH5 continuous autofocus setting for video: why?
GH5 continuous autofocus setting for video: why?
Jun 1, 2018
The GH5 has a nice switch on the back: manual focus, continuous autofocus, single autofocus (or autofocus flexible). So far so good, great switch, great position. And it works as expected for photos.
But for video, it does not. For video - if you want to change from single to continuous autofocus, you need to go into a menu. And I believe you can't even assign that setting to a function button. Note that the switch on the back of the camera still turns on manual focus, I believe.
Why?
I can see some people want a separate setting for video, so that they never use continuous autofocus. But is the default that this setting is in a menu, when there is a nice switch for it? So perhaps the menu item can say: continuous / single / use switch. I kinda think Panasonic knows more about this than I do, but I just don't get it?

It is the same with the G9, and I agree, it is a disconnect in terms of user interface.
The only reason I can think of, is that maybe Panasonic anticipates some people want to switch settings during a shoot and flipping a physical switch is going to introduce more camera shake than using the touchscreen or Fn buttons to do it?

Same with the G80 too.
It is rare for me to use c-af for video, so I have it set to ON in a specific custom mode only, and off in all other custom modes.
I agree though...it does seem odd to have this disconnect.

That is a plausible explanation.
But the menu could still have a choice like use switch. And I'll double check, but in a quick review I didn't see the ability to make this part of a function button.

Not just AF, either.
While the OP mentions the separation and confusion about focus modes for video, there are many other areas where this confusion arises - for example, just what parameters are transferred with the custom modes, what parameters change when you use iA, what parameters apply when you use custom video vs the video button.
These interfaces are a mess.

Would it work to turn AFC on and then use the AF/AE lock when you don't want to use it? There are a couple menu options to customize how the AF/AE lock button functions (i.e., AF lock only, toggle rather than hold).

Agree. I don't know if there are similarities or differences between the G9 and GH5 series, but I noticed the following inconsistencies with the G9:
- Although Photo Style appears in both stills and video menus as separate settings, but in fact they are linked so, for example, you cannot have Natural for photos and Cinelike D for video.
- The way the shutter button works when the mode dial is in movie mode, vs everywhere else. If you get into the habit of using the shutter button to capture a still frame while recording video, you'll get a nasty surprise in movie mode as the shutter button starts/stop the video in that mode.
- Not really an inconsistency but either a bug or an annoying "feature": If you turn the mic limiter off, the microphone levels cannot be turned off (menu option to do so is disabled).
