How do I Convert Military Time? Simple Trick

Are you interested in how these converters work or do you want to convert these times by yourself? If so, I give you a short explanation with the useful formula below.

There is nothing too hard when you want to convert time from 24-hours time format to 12-hours time format or vice versa. It is about adding or subtracting 12 hours in your time.

Differencies between standard time and military time - short explanation

The minutes are always the same, no matter the time is in 24-Hours Time Format or Standard Format (12-Hours Time Format).

So it means, you don't need to worry about minutes when you're converting a given time. All you need to learn is how to convert Military Time to hours.

And the last thing you should remember, Military Time always contains four digits so when the hours are from 0 to 9 you have to add "leading zero" at the beginning.

Just follow these simple rules:

Converting from Military Time to Normal Time

Simple rule when converting time from Military Time to Standard Time is:

When the hours are from 0 to 12 you don't subtract 12 hours and use AM. When the hours are from 13 to 24 you have to subtract 12 hours and use PM.

Some examples for better understanding: 0935 Military Time is converting as 9:35 AM Normal Time because the given time is from 0 to 12. On the other hand, 2135 Military Time is converting as 9:35 PM Normal Time because the given time is from 13 to 24 so you have to subtract 12 hours.

Step-by-step guide for these conversions is described below:

Conversion of 0935 Military Time to Standard Time:

  • Following the rule above, the given time is smaller than 12 so you don't subtract 12 hours from 0935 hours
  • 9 – 0 hours = 9 hours
  • 35 minutes is still 35 minutes
  • Given time is from 0 to 12 so you add AM and colon
  • The conversion of 0935 hours is 9:35 AM Standard Time

Conversion of 2135 Military Time to Standard Time:

  • Following the rule above, the given time is greater than 12 so you subtract 12 hours from 2135 hours
  • 21 – 12 hours = 9 hours
  • 35 minutes is still 35 minutes
  • Given time is from 13 to 24 so you add PM and colon
  • The conversion of 2135 hours is 9:35 PM Standard Time

Converting from Normal Time to Military Time

Simple rule when converting from Military Time to Standard Time is:

When you have AM in Normal Time you don't add 12 hours to Military Time. When you have a PM in Normal Time you have to add 12 hours to Military Time. Remove AM or PM from the converted time.

Here are also some examples for better understanding: 8:35 AM Normal Time is converted as 0835 Military Time and 8:35 PM is converted as 2035 Military Time. Step-by-step guide for these conversions is described below:

Conversion of 8:35 AM Standard Time to Military Time:

  • Following the rule above, the given time is AM so you don't add 12 hours to 8:35 AM
  • 8 + 0 hours = 8 hours
  • 35 minutes is still 35 minutes
  • Remove AM and colon
  • The conversion of 8:35 AM is 0835 Military Time

Conversion of 8:35 PM Standard Time to Military Time:

  • Following the rule above, the given time is PM so you add 12 hours to 8:35 PM
  • 8 + 12 hours = 20 hours
  • 35 minutes is still 35 minutes
  • Remove AM and colon
  • The conversion of 8:35 PM is 2035 Military Time

And that's it. Following these simple rules, you will be able to convert any time you want.

And How to Convert Military Time to Minutes?

In general, the minutes are always the same no matter what time format you use.

As you already know, Military Time contains four digits where the first two digits are for hours and the second two digits are for minutes. Hours and minutes in standard time are divided by a colon. So you know the two digits behind the colon are for minutes.

When you want to convert 24-hours time format to 12-hours time format, you have to care about hours only. The minutes are always the same so you don't need to do any conversions. Here are some examples:

Military Time – 24 Hours Standard Time – 12 Hours
0835 8:35 AM
1152 11:52 AM
1515 3:15 PM
2228 10:28 PM

Is minute conversion clear now? I hope it is because an hour contains 60 minutes in both time formats and that's the reason why you don't convert minutes.

Some Quick facts about Military Time

Military time is a 24 hours' time format. It is the time system used by armies, first responders and healthcare professionals, and many other people around the world.

In this time system, there is no AM or PM. The time in Military Time Format starts at 0000 and ends at 2400. So you don't have to repeat 12-hours as the Normal Time Format does twice a day.

All you have to do is continue counting after 1200 hours with 1300 hours up to 2400 hours. Nothing is confusing here, and that's why this time format is used by armies and other professions.

But it's understandable most other people are not so familiar with this time format because you use 12-hours time format in daily life. Sometimes, people see time written in Military Time format and want to understand what it means.
